NorthWest Shintaido Exchange

NWSE Welcomes You!

Bellingham classes are led by John and Lee Seaman, Shintaido instructors since 1986 and certified by Shintaido of America and the International Shintaido Federation. They are assisted by nationally certified assistant instructor Isabel Farquhar.

Shintaido movements are open and flowing, and emphasize partner work. Shintaido is practiced freehand and with bo (quarterstaff) and jo (walking stick).

Beginners first learn to relax, then to expand their movement, then to block an incoming strike, and then to blend with it, evade it, or anticipate it. The advanced movements are not powered by muscle, but by alignment, centering, and grounding, somewhat like the Chinese art Tai Chi Chuan.
